Karaoke

This time, of the non-competition variety XD

I had a really awesome time at the bar with [livejournal.com profile] itsacz and some other people from the karaoke discussion group at work. It was really good and there were a lot of good duets songs which [livejournal.com profile] itsacz missed. :P

What I sang )

What I want to sing next time, possibly )

It was, again, really awesome and I swear that's not the two chocolate martinis I had talking. I think the next one may be in downtown Seattle, in a karaoke bar that has private rooms. ^^;;

On my way home last night, I saw an accident very near the building I work in. I don't know exactly what happened, but there was an ambulance, 4 police cars, and a cyclist who was being loaded onto a stretcher. His bicycle was on the sidewalk though and there was a SUV also stopped at the scene. I hope the cyclist is alright...

But in happier news, I went out with some of the other Singaporeans (and non-S'poreans too) and we had a really awesome dinner at I Love Sushi followed by a few hours of pool at Garage in downtown Seattle.

And yes, I did eat sushi too in addition to the chicken teriyaki I had together with a delicious mudpie. :D

Or at least to those of you in the US ^^;;;

I'm really looking forward to the holiday, not because of turkey-stuffing opportunities, but because...

I'm going skiing with some friends of mine. On real snow and slopes.

What could be more awesome than that? XD

Anyways, I'll be leaving tonight and coming back late on Saturday, so don't be surprised if you don't see me online. I don't know if I'll be able to take any pictures, but this time I promise I'll write about it! *hides from [livejournal.com profile] wao's mpitten and its death stare cling*

Oh, and as an added bonus? I'll finally get around to posting those entries which I never did.
nyankoframe: (neko-Shinku)
unfortunately

I've been really busy with work, though, to the extent of working over the weekends and not having much free time for anything, or not feeling like doing anything, when I get back home.

So the Boston/New York pictures will probably have to wait a while longer to be posted. Sorry.

A bit old, but I think at least one person would appreciate this. :D

You know who you are )

In other news, I went to Vancouver last Saturday on a day trip with some friends, and it was, for lack of a better word, awesome.
Vancouver )

On Sunday, I went to a friend's place for a barbecue lunch. Even though it was raining, he still went ahead with the BBQ, and it was surprisingly good. I enjoyed myself a lot there and felt like I had a good weekend overall.

This week's been quite busy with work and new responsibilities as a result of the review feedback that I'd gotten last week in addition to some things that were completely unexpected, which is why I'm really glad that I'll be going on vacation tonight for 8 days. :D I'm really looking forward to meeting [livejournal.com profile] haplo3k and [livejournal.com profile] fusilliban for the first time, as well as meeting [livejournal.com profile] relsqui and [livejournal.com profile] testing4l again in Boston. And then after that I'm going to New York for 6 days to spend time there with another friend of mine and visit some relatives.

I have a feeling that it's going to be an exciting week ahead. ^^
nyankoframe: (Default)
I'm finally leaving on my first vacation in about.. 2 months, though it seems more like 4 at this point. ^^;;

I'm also really looking forward to the time off because it'll let me recharge, and I get to go to a new place that I've never been to before. Hopefully certain other events will occur, too. XD

In other news, I've started playing City of Heroes and I have to say that it's one of the best MMORPGs I've seen (I've seen World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, though I haven't actually played either), mostly because of its story line. Who can resist being a hero? :P

In other news, I'm really excited about the plans for Windows Vista SP1 that Microsoft announced yesterday. It's going to be a really significant update to Vista and has a lot of cool new features in it. ^_^ Of course, I'm biased since I work on part of it, but let's ignore that

And for people using Windows XP, SP3 will finally be coming out around the same time as well. It's essentially a rollup of all the current updates and shouldn't include anything new, based on what I've read.

And there's my token work-related item in this post, and that's about it~

*goes back to packing*

PS: I think one or two people will definitely get the "Cow Cow" reference XD

Just a short post since I'm tired, but..

I had a really great time this evening with a friend from work ^_^ She invited me over to her house to practice together, and for dinner as well (though I didn't know about the dinner in advance).

To make a long story short, it was really funny intriguing to play on a real (baby grand) piano with real action again after more than 6 months. ^^;; And even though we made a ton of mistakes (I was playing the primo part and she was playing secondo), we were both able to play it twice without giving up completely, and we didn't blame each other for the mistakes, instead laughing at the mistakes. ^^;;;

I also got to meet a friend of hers and her family (her husband couldn't make it), and she sang so beautifully it brought tears into my eyes. T_T Which was what they said about my playing, too, especially when I tried the solo version of Pas de deux and later on played La Savane and Berceuse (Cradle Song)...

Overall, it was a really good time and I hope to meet my friend again to practice together with her. I think her piano teacher's even looking for duets that we can both play and is planning on hearing both of us play live. ^^;;;

A rough list of things that happened over the last few weeks, not in any particular order:

I got a lot of anime DVDs and manga volumes, including Fruits Basket (both anime and manga up to volume 16), Lupin III, Ghost in the Shell (the movie, SAC, SAC 2 and SSS), Lain, Paranoia Agent, Last Exile, Haibane Renmei, Bottle Fairy, volume 1 of Princess Tutu (a special request I made to [livejournal.com profile] huegcaet), Nazca and a lot of other series that I can't remember

I found two friends at work to play piano duets with! ^_^ And I'm playing with one of this Thursday, which I hope will go well

I organized a Korean movie screening at my apartment tonight, since we couldn't really go to Imo's for dinner and my apartment is also very close to everyone's offices, and it was about 3 hours of non-stop fun together with eating a yummy take-out dinner from the nearby Paldo World. "I'm a Cyborg, but it's OK" is a movie that does a lot to improve your Korean vocabulary, and it's also really interesting how it can actually tackle the social issue of mental illnesses in a very matter-of-fact way. ^^;;

I've also been working out at the gym and I noticed that I was able to lift 15 pounds more for the lats pulldown, as well as increasing weights on some of the other exercises in my workout routine, though the shoulder complex is still the hardest/most painful one right now. ^^;; I also lost 6 pounds when I checked on Monday, which is probably a good thing

I've had a really exciting weekend, although it was pretty tiring ^^;;

I went to a cheese and wine party on Friday night, and I met several people from IRC and had a really good time sampling various cheeses as well as a few glasses of wine. It also helped that my friend has 4 cats and they're all very adorable. ^_^ There was also some really cool Wii Sports and Katamari action, in addition to Gears of War (in which I was actually surprisingly decent for once). Now I want to buy a Wii and a PS2

On Saturday, I went to an annual picnic organized by Microsoft which was really exciting though it was more of a family event. ^^;; I had a great time there with [livejournal.com profile] itsacz and some other friends from work. After the picnic we went for dinner and had a really nice pasta while some people played mahjong. I can't play it though. XD

Sunday was pretty quiet except for catching up on sleep and playing some of the new scores and CDs I've got recently. I might post more about those soon. ^^;;

Next week will be pretty interesting since I won't be in the office for about half the week. Let's see if anything happens to my office. XD

The evidence )

HOW DO YOU LIKE THAT NUMBER 220.52 THERE NOW~ [Edit: I did the whole cycling business, including detours but not including stops, in 19 hours, 36 minutes and 9 seconds - too slow for the one-day STP though]

It was an awesome two days of cycling, even though my legs actually got so painful during the last 25 miles that I just couldn't stop cycling. ^^;; I also don't particularly want to see a bridge, a railroad crossing or a hill for the next few days. :P

Some of the highlights:

- I slept in a church on Saturday night! Unfortunately, due to a mixup, my sleeping bag went straight to Portland, so I slept for about 2 hours on the floor and then wandered over to a couch where I fell fast asleep even while people were moving around and talking. ^^;; But at least it proves that thanks to my NS training I can sleep anywhere XD

- There are towns with interesting names in Washington, such as Winlock, Roy, Castle Rock (which has no castles or rocks), Yelm, Spanaway, Centralia, Tenino, Chehalis and the town that wins the award for the most unique name I've ever heard of, Vader. Yes, you heard that right. No, I don't know whether it has any relation/connection to Darth Vader or Star Wars.

- Cycling across the Lewis & Clark bridge into Oregon was a really cool experience. The Gold Wing escorts, as well as police, stopped traffic completely on one lane just to let us go over the bridge, and it was a long climb up followed by a fast downhill over expansion joints and then a ramp onto Highway 30 in Oregon. I think I did about 26-27 mph on my bicycle. ^^;

- Surprisingly enough, my bicycle didn't give any major mechanical problems at all during the whole race (apart from an issue involving my saddlebag, my helmet and my brakes). I feel bad for the people who had mechanical problems though. One guy apparently had 3 flat tires on the first day and a fourth one just 15 miles from the finish line. :( And, of course, there was a pretty serious accident, although I think I missed it completely...

- I have a nice tan starting from just above my knees down my legs, which I blame on wearing cycling shorts. >_> No, I won't post pictures of the tan. :P

- There were a lot of very helpful volunteers, including quite a few 8-year old girls selling lemonade on the way. I also think I bought at least 6 or 7 bottles of Gatorade and related things to get me through some of the hills, including THE HILL (tm) - which is a 1 mile climb, and I'm proud to say that I made it up that hill without walking. :)

- The youngest cyclist was 6 years old and he was riding his own bicycle. I have no idea how old the oldest participant was, but I did see several people in their 50s and 60s.

- I saw quite a few cows, horses and other livestock, and some very lovely countryside and farms. I didn't see any Cows though. :P

If When I do STP next year, though, I'm definitely getting a road bike at least 6 months in advance~
nyankoframe: (Default)
So on Saturday I did my last major training for STP by cycling about 55 miles in total in 6 and a half hours. I originally intended to cycle all the way to Snoqualmie Falls, but due to a combination of factors (starting late, missing several turnoffs, going up the wrong trail and not wanting to start cycling back in pitch-black darkness) I turned around somewhere along the Preston-Fall City road (which I'd say was about 60-70% of the way there).

It was an interesting experience, and I ended up with a pretty good idea of how well I can pace myself. I also feel like I tested my endurance, especially when cycling along the Sunset-Preston "trail" (which was actually a somewhat bumpy gravel road), and the High Point Way into Preston, which had several hills and not much shade (this was around 3-4 pm in the afteroon). :P

After meeting [livejournal.com profile] itsacz for dinner in Issaquah, I started back and had a pretty interesting experience going along the I-90 trail (with headlights, since it was dark by then) and then climbing up 148th Ave SE past BCC and heading straight home. I can't believe I cycled on the road and merged lanes successfully. :o

Among things I saw on the way there and back:
- An Aerio parked along Main Street (in Bellevue), which reminded me of someone's car quite a bit. :P
- There were several police cars parked in Issaquah outside a police station right next to a no-parking sign. >_> This also made it hard for me to cycle around them since there was oncoming traffic
- There are a lot of hills, especially on the way to the Lake Sammamish parkway.

Next time, I definitely need to start earlier. :P

I have just two words to describe: simply awesome

Definitely worth the $9.75 for the ticket admission price, and the opening-night audience was very much into the spirit of the movie too, applauding and laughing at the appropriate moments.

Dinner with some new friends from work was also really good, although I think it's going to take me a bit of getting used to having dinner in a bar where they card you upon entry, even if you're not ordering anything alcoholic. :P

Checkup

I went to the ER today and after a few hours, found out that I most likely sustained facial soft tissue injuries as well as a concussive head injury. Yay. :P

It was pretty cool, though (both literally and figuratively), since I was wearing a part-hospital gown and I was shivering and hungry while waiting for my X-rays and CT scan results, but at least nothing's seriously wrong and I should be mostly okay to go back to work (though I'm going to hold off on cycling for a day or two, at least).

Putting ice on my cheek and jaw and taking Tylenol/Advil for the pain should probably help muchly.

Also, I hope to hear Epithalamium at someone's wedding (or to play it at their wedidng) in the near future. ^^;;

And since I have a paid account, what better way than to be silly with a poll?

I'm leaving to meet a friend whom I've known for almost 4 years but have never met in person before this. ^^;; Will be back on Sunday night~ maybe with pictures, maybe not
nyankoframe: (Default)
I was coming into work this morning from NE 40th St (and then a right onto 156th and then into the main campus through 36th) doing about 12-13 mph because it was raining and the pavement road was wet. There was one driver in particular who was apparently so annoyed at my cycling that she got out of her car at the traffic light (while both of us were in the left-turning lane) and told me to either get a car or get off the road.

I suppose this is to be expected, but I thought someone working at Microsoft, of all places, would be more tolerant of cyclists, especially on a rainy day. It was also darkly humorous that if I took that person's suggestion of getting off the road, I'd have to either cross 3 lanes to get to the sidewalk on the right-hand side of the road or go across 2 lanes of oncoming traffic (!!!) to get to the sidewalk on that side.

Some people... *rolls eyes*

The last two days were full of firsts:

  • Yesterday, for the first time, I got slightly tipsy happy on soju ^^;;; And I also had a really wonderful dinner with some of the people from my Korean class as well as with our teacher~ And I should probably watch Oldboy at some point

  • A bug that I filed was so important that it became a ship-stopping bug. ^^;; It was pretty impressive amazing considering how much some people really didn't want to consider it as one and how hard they fought...

  • I had my first driving lesson in lunch-time traffic today. It wasn't really that scary except for when people suddenly merged into my lane or came out of driveways. ^^;;; I still need to work on my steering and braking though... Anyone wants to watch me practice? xD

  • I went to Quiznos' for the first time today and had a very yummy sub~

  • I signed up for my first ever bike race, and to top it off, it's the annual Seattle to Portland cycling race, which is about 204 miles long and is almost exactly a month from now. Time to start cycling to the place where blobs live somewhere hilly and far away. ^^;;

  • I finally got myself _________ ________ ____ (check my profile) >.>

nyankoframe: (Default)
I got a new phone (a Treo 750) from Cingular the new AT&T, and it came with a new number too as well as a voice and data plan. No more prepaid cards for a while! ^^;;

If you'd like to get my new number, feel free to leave a comment (comments are screened) with some way of contacting you if I don't already have/know that.

But first, a random weird meme!

How weird am I? )

I ended up not being able to go for the go-karting event like I planned because something important/urgent (in work terminology, a priority 0) came up at work at the last minute and I was stuck there the whole afternoon. :( But that was more than made up for by a wonderful birthday dinner at Blue Ginger with [livejournal.com profile] itsacz and another friend. ^_^

I'd had 육개장 (yook gae jang) the last time I went (which is very delicious and filling, and just the right level of spicy), so this time we decided to do a grill instead. We picked a table which had a flat grill, not a curved one, so that limited our choices somewhat ^^;; But the server was very helpful and offered us suggestions on which meats we could cook on our grill, so we ended up cooking boneless premium 갈비 (beef kalbi) and 돼지 갈비 (pork kalbi) the first time, and the second time with 불고기 (bulgogi). We also experimented with things like cooking seaweed and radish on the grill; it was interesting, but the seaweed still tasted like seaweed even after it was grilled. ^^;;;

Of course, since it was my birthday, we had to have a toast, so my friends bought a bottle of 소주 (soju). It had a pretty nice flavour, being slightly sweeter than normal rice wine yet not too sweet, and it went down quite well. ^_^; At 14% alcohol content (by volume), it was also pretty mild, which was good, since I was being driven back home. ^^;;; Reading the Wikipedia article may also be quite enlightening. I also now have an empty bottle in my kitchen. :P

One of the things that amused me greatly was that we ran into my Korean teacher while we were there. ^^;;; He wished me a happy birthday and told us a little bit about what he was going to cover next week. I'm really looking forward to the beginner-continuation classes that'll be starting next week and going on for the next 10 weeks! It's definitely cheaper than going to UW's summer classes ($500 per credit hour >_>) and in a way it's also much more fun being in a relatively small class (right now our class has about 10 people).

Today's my first driving lesson and I'm somewhat nervous about it because it's the first time ever that I'll be driving a car, but at the same time it's also something I have to do a very useful skill. I'm probably not going to give up cycling to work, though, in spite of what everyone says. ^^;;

고양이가 등을 화살모양으로 둥글게 구부르다~ 고양이가 야옹 울다~~ 고양이가 목을 가르랑거리다~~~!! <3
nyankoframe: (Default)
...except this time it's actually almost my birthday. o_o

I 've been up for 17 hours today and I don't feel sleepy. ^^;;; This can probably be explained by drinking tea, lots of sweet drinks, a bottle of stout in the morning, energy and determination in finding bugs at work and getting lots of work done today (which I came back from at 9:30 pm >_>), playing MvC 2 against someone at work and actually managing to win only once, and just possibly, the fact that I'm one year older and alive and having things to look forward to. ^^;

I'm really grateful to all my friends and family who got me a lot of birthday presents, including some things I never expected. ^^;;;;

In no particular order, I'd really like to thank these people for their presents that really mean a lot to me~ (this list will be updated, too, so please don't feel left out if you're not on it yet):

  • red Blue blob and Yuu

  • grue Cow and Espada

  • a The mpitten

  • A dessert pudding

  • A warm, fuzzy, furry creature that can spit and is very beautiful :)

I'd also like to thank everyone who wished me online, either via messages or /kill (you know who you are ^^;;; ).

I really hope the year ahead will be better, and I'm really looking forward to it! I hope everyone else will have a good year ahead too, especially several of my close friends for whom things are somewhat rough right now.

In other news, I AM GOING TO START DRIVING LESSONS ON FRIDAY RAWR <_< This means I will be able to get CAT soon, hopefully~

The piece I'm listening to is from a 6-CD box set titled "Piano Fantasy: Music for Two Pianos" and is completely awesome~ Thank you so much to the friends who bought it for me~
