I have passed my driving test on the first try.

That is all. :D

I am going to pick up my friend's car and drive it home to practice! This would not be so bad were it not for the following things:

1) The car is in the U District and I'm in RedmondBellevue.
2) I don't have my license yet, only my learner's permit, so I need someone to be in the passenger seat with me. [ETA] Fortunately, this problem is solved...
3) The route involves at least one freeway, possibly two.
4) This will be taking place during the evening rush hour.

So, uh... wish me luck?

[Update at 10:05 pm] All done! The car is currently at my office so I can practice tomorrow. I even survived driving on 520. :D
nyankoframe: (mpittened)
No, I'm not literally mpittened at work unless, that is, I bring along nyankopitten and promote it to mpitten to mpitten myself with, but I certainly feel like that today in particular.

The week since I came back has been alternately frustrating, tiring and exciting. It's frustrating because I keep running into limitations (some of which are meaningless and others which are crippling) of the tools that I use to develop these work items; tiring because I pretty much have to write everything from scratch since there isn't anything that previously exists which is also largely because things were in constant flux until very recently and also because there are hard/immovable deadlines for the work (which a lot of other things are also riding on); and exciting because for each piece of the overall project that I do finish (I've done about 5 or 6 pieces so far, and a colleague on my team's done about 4 or 5 other important pieces) I can put them together and watch things take shape (although they still have to be tested and debugged, which invariably results in more frustration, hair falling out and other things including a tendency to be snappish sometimes...).

At the same time, I started my driving lessons again today with the same instructor that I'd taken lessons with previously. It was pretty fun and I remembered most of the things from the last time, although there was a minor scare when the car went over the curb after I made a right turn and accelerated a little too fast, which I also blame on the car having a very twitchy accelerator pedal. But at least nothing bad happened and hopefully nothing will on Friday, when my next lesson is. ^^;;

And since [livejournal.com profile] wao has been complaining a lot about cat pictures, here's one to make her be quiet satisfied.

They are Pixel and Matrix, and they are made of awesome, win and above all, CAT )

I haven't forgotten about my trip holiday report, BTW. XD

Edit: I left work at 11:00 pm, and I'm cycling home now, to come back tomorrow and continue working.

And since I have a paid account, what better way than to be silly with a poll?

The last two days were full of firsts:

  • Yesterday, for the first time, I got slightly tipsy happy on soju ^^;;; And I also had a really wonderful dinner with some of the people from my Korean class as well as with our teacher~ And I should probably watch Oldboy at some point

  • A bug that I filed was so important that it became a ship-stopping bug. ^^;; It was pretty impressive amazing considering how much some people really didn't want to consider it as one and how hard they fought...

  • I had my first driving lesson in lunch-time traffic today. It wasn't really that scary except for when people suddenly merged into my lane or came out of driveways. ^^;;; I still need to work on my steering and braking though... Anyone wants to watch me practice? xD

  • I went to Quiznos' for the first time today and had a very yummy sub~

  • I signed up for my first ever bike race, and to top it off, it's the annual Seattle to Portland cycling race, which is about 204 miles long and is almost exactly a month from now. Time to start cycling to the place where blobs live somewhere hilly and far away. ^^;;

  • I finally got myself _________ ________ ____ (check my profile) >.>

But first, a random weird meme!

How weird am I? )

I ended up not being able to go for the go-karting event like I planned because something important/urgent (in work terminology, a priority 0) came up at work at the last minute and I was stuck there the whole afternoon. :( But that was more than made up for by a wonderful birthday dinner at Blue Ginger with [livejournal.com profile] itsacz and another friend. ^_^

I'd had 육개장 (yook gae jang) the last time I went (which is very delicious and filling, and just the right level of spicy), so this time we decided to do a grill instead. We picked a table which had a flat grill, not a curved one, so that limited our choices somewhat ^^;; But the server was very helpful and offered us suggestions on which meats we could cook on our grill, so we ended up cooking boneless premium 갈비 (beef kalbi) and 돼지 갈비 (pork kalbi) the first time, and the second time with 불고기 (bulgogi). We also experimented with things like cooking seaweed and radish on the grill; it was interesting, but the seaweed still tasted like seaweed even after it was grilled. ^^;;;

Of course, since it was my birthday, we had to have a toast, so my friends bought a bottle of 소주 (soju). It had a pretty nice flavour, being slightly sweeter than normal rice wine yet not too sweet, and it went down quite well. ^_^; At 14% alcohol content (by volume), it was also pretty mild, which was good, since I was being driven back home. ^^;;; Reading the Wikipedia article may also be quite enlightening. I also now have an empty bottle in my kitchen. :P

One of the things that amused me greatly was that we ran into my Korean teacher while we were there. ^^;;; He wished me a happy birthday and told us a little bit about what he was going to cover next week. I'm really looking forward to the beginner-continuation classes that'll be starting next week and going on for the next 10 weeks! It's definitely cheaper than going to UW's summer classes ($500 per credit hour >_>) and in a way it's also much more fun being in a relatively small class (right now our class has about 10 people).

Today's my first driving lesson and I'm somewhat nervous about it because it's the first time ever that I'll be driving a car, but at the same time it's also something I have to do a very useful skill. I'm probably not going to give up cycling to work, though, in spite of what everyone says. ^^;;

...except this time it's actually almost my birthday. o_o

I 've been up for 17 hours today and I don't feel sleepy. ^^;;; This can probably be explained by drinking tea, lots of sweet drinks, a bottle of stout in the morning, energy and determination in finding bugs at work and getting lots of work done today (which I came back from at 9:30 pm >_>), playing MvC 2 against someone at work and actually managing to win only once, and just possibly, the fact that I'm one year older and alive and having things to look forward to. ^^;

I'm really grateful to all my friends and family who got me a lot of birthday presents, including some things I never expected. ^^;;;;

In no particular order, I'd really like to thank these people for their presents that really mean a lot to me~ (this list will be updated, too, so please don't feel left out if you're not on it yet):

  • red Blue blob and Yuu

  • grue Cow and Espada

  • a The mpitten

  • A dessert pudding

  • A warm, fuzzy, furry creature that can spit and is very beautiful :)

I'd also like to thank everyone who wished me online, either via messages or /kill (you know who you are ^^;;; ).

I really hope the year ahead will be better, and I'm really looking forward to it! I hope everyone else will have a good year ahead too, especially several of my close friends for whom things are somewhat rough right now.

In other news, I AM GOING TO START DRIVING LESSONS ON FRIDAY RAWR <_< This means I will be able to get CAT soon, hopefully~

The piece I'm listening to is from a 6-CD box set titled "Piano Fantasy: Music for Two Pianos" and is completely awesome~ Thank you so much to the friends who bought it for me~

I was invited to a dinner party this evening at a fellow Sri Lankan's house in Seattle, and I was somewhat apprehensive about going there, because I hadn't gone to Seattle before and I was afraid of getting lost. I've gone to the U District twice, but that's different. :P

So I ended up leaving almost half an hour later than I originally intended, and I got to downtown Seattle itself without any trouble on the 545 Express in about half an hour, which is pretty good for a Saturday evening. :P The fun started after I took another bus to get nearer to the house...

I ended up walking in the wrong direction twice, and I had to call the person I was visiting to get details on how to get to the road his house was on. And once I was there, I walked right past his house without even noticing it until someone called out to me and asked whether I was going to his house! Not to mention it was also cold...

But I had a great time there, having a really nice dinner, meeting lots of new people and talking to them (and their cute kids). And I actually ended up having a glass of wine (actually, two or three partly filled glasses) as well as iced coffee (both plain and mixed with rum) and a cup of tea. And I got a lift back, so everything was all good. :)

And I also got my official learner's permit (the plastic version) in the mail today (or should that be yesterday?), so I can officially start taking driving lessons and using it as an ID.

I'm hoping I can get what I need to do done in about 2 or 3 hours at work today. ^^;;;

Today has been a great day so far. :)

- I passed my written driving test and got my learner's permit. This means that I can now take driving lessons and eventually get my deriver driver's license. It also means that I can finally drink wine in a restaurant and so on, but that's another story

- I started looking at some apartments, and will be looking at more tomorrow afternoon. The one I saw this morning was pretty nice and large (710 square feet), although that complex doesn't have bicycle racks, so I need to keep my bicycle on my balcony and wheel it in and out every day... It's also a bit on the high side, though it does have lots of amenities, like a 24/7 fitness center and a basketball court. Oh, and it won't have cable/dish, and Internet access will be something I have to set up seperately. But I'm liking what I see. And they allow cats. ^_^

- My TRSI order arrived today! 25 ADV DVDs for $100~ I was worried that it wouldn't come before I moved, and I was rather panicky about it to the extent of trying to ship it to my office, but it came. ^_^

List of DVDs I ordered, for myself and other people )

DVDs I still need to order from somewhere )

- Now that I've figured out how to make edible delicious turkey, I can actually start eating it more often. Which is good because it's filling. And because it makes you happy. ^_^

- And I'm off work today, although tomorrow is going to be pretty hectic in the morning. ^^;;

This is a question for all the people in Singapore who read my blog. :P

How much are driving lessons, both at a school and with a private instructor? And is it feasible to pass the practical test in two months?

I know that lessons at BBDC cost about $58.80 during off-peak hours or $67.80 during peak hours, but I'm not really sure how to find out about private instructors; hence why I'm asking.

If anyone knows, please feel free to leave a comment. ^_^;
