At the end of 5 rounds (out of 7), my team is on 2-3 (wins-losses). While this isn't a particularly good result, given that we won rounds 1 and 5 and lost the 3 in between, at least we seem to be adapting to the expectations that adjudicators have of us and dealing with weird cases.

That's not to say that some of the losses weren't particularly disappointing, especially because we strongly disagreed with the adjudicators and/or we lost to weaker teams.

Although I would have wanted to be in the position of our first team, which faced Monash 1 in the third round. :P

The last two rounds tomorrow are both silent, so we won't know whether we won or lost them until the tab is released after the tournament. I don't hold out a lot of hope for us breaking though (except maybe into the ESL semis).

It seems that ibuprofen helps somewhat for my migraine/cluster headaches, although I'm not too sure - I was very much sick on Monday though it seems to have gone down somewhat now.

Aw. I'm sorry to hear you were feeling sick/ :( I hope it's better now.

Don't give up hope for the final rounds. Just be optimistic about it! And regardless of how you do, you still gained a good experience. Look at your strengths and weaknesses and see what you're good at and what you can do better. :)

Good luck basket!

If it helps, my left eye decided that it had to play up today (it got really inflamed) so I had to go to the campus pharmacy and buy a saline solution, eye wash and eye drops. It's still somewhat inflamed, but a little better now.

Hopefully Dreamworld tomorrow won't be ruined by the experience. ^_^;;

Well, I hope the first team have been properly chastised by their baptism of fire!

I wasn't aware you were supposed to meet, um, certain kinds of expectations, but then white person's bias is a bit hard to avoid unless they're very conscious of themselves having that bias.

Or did you get people from, ahem, other nationalities?

They have, although I don't think the experience helped them much, because at the end of yesterday they were not in a good position.

Yes, we are. For example:

Australian adj in round 3 (where we met SMU and lost to them - again): "I don't know what the WTO is"
Malaysian adj in the same round: "I know what the WTO is, but I wanted to hear you argue on the basis of cost"
(this in an environmental debate, mind you!)

There are some good things though.

Round 5, chair's OA (which we won): "I'm not very sure whether the first 6 minutes of your speech were rebuttal, summary or substantive, but the last two minutes of your speech were solid gold."

And I finally got my tech (sort of) motion. :P

On the opening roast: Well, as I have told you...

But no one is expecting an instant effect, less so when you're still out there and not back home yet.

On the Aussie - point taken, when you're too used to using certain terms you can forget to define them.

On the non-Aussie - well... We'll chat about this over tea?

Oh, and I'll be damned if there's a last-minute switch to something related to the London tube explosions.
