I got tagged by [livejournal.com profile] chibi_nasu, and I forgot to exclude X from the list of valid letters. Oops. ^^;;;

The 'starts with' meme )

I actually had quite a lot of fun coming up with words that I liked in this case. But I'm not going to be evil and give anyone letters like 'Q', 'X', 'Y' or 'Z'. :P

Edit: Updated with the letter 'B' from [livejournal.com profile] meganemagic:

1. (William) Bolcom - I love him "just" because he's a ragtime composer and composed (among other pieces) the Graceful Ghost rag and [secret]. 'Nuff said. :P

2. Beauty - I like people who are beautiful. Not necessarily in the physical/"loaded" sense of the word, but people who are beautiful inside too. Sometimes, more so than people who are physically beautiful :)

3. Bond - Both the musical group and James Bond. Both are good in their own ways. :)

4. Bewitched - I loved that show when it was on TV! Especially for its premise and some of the really funny things that happened during episodes.

5. Beethoven - He wrote a lot of nice piano music, including the Moonlight Sonata and Pathetique, among others.

6. Barenaked Ladies - I was first introduced to them by [livejournal.com profile] karmaforone back in 2001, and again more recently by some other people who have LJ accounts but shall remain nameless for now. I love the music of theirs that I've heard, especially One Week, Pinch Me and Powder Blue. :P

7. Bananas - They're a good source of potassium and glucose, especially when you haven't eaten breakfast or don't have time to.

8. Boxer shorts - They can be very comfy for walking around the house or relaxing while playing the piano, although I certainly wouldn't wear them when going out. ^^;;

9. Bottles - You can store things in them. You can mount miniature ships or wood sculptures in them. You can blow into or over them and make music. You can use them to defend yourself. What's there not to like about bottles?

10. Blue - Even though it's not really a "guy" colour, I like various shades of blue such as pastel or baby blue, up to midnight and navy blue. In fact, my Vista theme right now is a somewhat dark shade of blue. ^_^

Until you go back 225 entries in your friends' page and then start reading them one by one, even the entries you've read or commented on before.

It's always interesting to find out what the people on your friends' list are doing (or have done) or how they feel. Sometimes it explains the way you see their actions, or the reasons why they do or don't do certain things. Other times, it's more as a status update so that when you start a conversation with them, you can find a mutual starting point without having to hesitate and stumble anxiously searching for a beginning.

But it's all interesting, all the time. :) Even if I don't comment on every single entry I read...

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

Last Saturday I gave [livejournal.com profile] testing4l a kidney (1000 points). In September I ate my brussel sprouts (1 points). Last Monday I gave [livejournal.com profile] nova20 a life-saving blood transfusion (50 points). In May on a flight to Pakistan, I stole the emergency flight information card (-40 points). In February I donated bone marrow to [livejournal.com profile] sotongxiaohei in a life-saving procedure (300 points).

Overall, I've been nice (1311 points). For Christmas I deserve a new bike!

Sincerely,
nyankoframe

While still packing, I remembered I said I would post this, and so I am. ^_^

I'm interviewing with the Windows Serviceability Engineering (WinSE) group. This group is essentially responsible for releasing the updates that appear on Windows Update, Automatic Updates, WSUS and so on. Basically, I'd be writing code and/or test tools within this group if I get hired. Thus, I've been forewarned to expect quite a few questions on data structures, algorithms, and logic puzzles. :P

The exact language for coding is still something I'm not too sure of yet though. The requirements state that C/C++ is one of them, but a friend of mine working there is coding in Perl. (I want to code in Perl too.) I'm currently learning STL (C++ templates) but it's a slow process.

I think I would enjoy working there, because I'm interested in security and also because this is a good way for me to continue/apply the research I had done for my HYP.

And now, I leave you with some randomness:

See, even nyanko can do a bunny-ears impression! )

Master want a cuppa?

This idea will be interesting if it takes off, because it'll be the first anime-themed cafe in Singapore as far as I know. And a maid cafe certainly would appeal to a lot of people. :P

Airport rules 'costing musicians'

This article talks about how the tighter security for flights originating or landing in the UK has caused a great deal of hardship to musicians who are now being required to place their instruments in the cargo hold of the airplane. While some people may argue that cameramen and photographers have had to live with the same restrictions for years and have managed to adapt to it, I believe that's a red herring argument. The nature of the items being compared - camera lenses, bodies, equipment, etc. versus rare antique musical instruments - means that what works for the cameramen doesn't work for musicians. You can ask Canon (or Olympus, etc.) to replace a set of lenses that are fogged or cracked from being ill-treated (and yes, this does happen - it is painful to see your luggage being thrown onto the baggage cart when it's unloaded from the aircraft), but how can you possibly ask Stradivarius to make a new violin?

The View From the Top
The View From the Top: Redux

These two blog posts are about how someone quit WoW (World of Warcraft) and his insights and perspectives during the process, as well as the reasons why. I think it's pretty interesting to read, especially when he talks about how WoW (and online MMORPGs in general) are essentially a form of addiction. I feel it's the case that some people don't have enough self-control or self-will to know when to stop playing, but it's also true that the game companies (such as Blizzard and SOE) are also responsible by adding new content (scenarios, dungeons, instances, etc.) with corresponding rewards and making it difficult if not impossible to achieve unless a party spends their whole life playing the game. Even then, the rewards are illusory, because of how often the content is pushed out.

And in the end, what's the reward for all your hard work? Something that lasts maybe a week or two before it's replaced. As opposed to something more tangible, like buying a music CD for yourself, or working at a place you enjoy. Or even something intangible, like spending time together with your partner/spouse, going out with your friends and enjoying time instead of feeling that you have to rush back to log in, understanding yourself better, making the world a better place...

Rozen neko~ (if this link is dead by the time you view it, ask me for the image) (replaced link to 2chan with this link because the original image is 404'd now...)
This image should make complete sense if you have ever watched Rozen Maiden (which I finally did yesterday). It also reminded me a lot of Shinku and the person who uses that nick (sometimes) on IRC. :P

This is the description included with the image:
近所で猫が増えすぎた為、駆除が始まりました。
先程買い物に行ってる間に、近くにいた野良ちゃんも連れて行かれたようで、隣の奥さんが教えてくれました・・・。
一匹でも多く逃げ延びますように・・・。

A (rough) translation using Excite is
"Exterminating started because the number of cats had increased too much in the vicinity. It escapes safely a lot by even one. "

Hurricane Katrina: One Year Later
This article talks about some of the post-Katrina devastation still present and how some peoples' lives are still affected now, more than a year after it occurred. I think these quotes from the article sum it up nicely:

You should understand that any story you hear about something this vast will bear the mark of the person telling it. A visitor, no matter how well-intentioned, will not see it the same way as one who calls the area home. Someone who lost their house will not see it the same as one whose losses were minimal. One who rode out the storm in New Orleans will not see it the same as an evacuee, nor will one who endured the belated and ham-handed evacuation of the Superdome and Convention Center see it the same as one who waited patiently in the suburbs for the electricity and relatives to return.

One who lost relatives or had to swim for his life in the flood will see it a lot differently from those of us who watched it on TV.

Thousands of rural communities were cut off from civilization by downed power and phone lines and rural roads choked with fallen trees. Many of those people had to rescue themselves with chainsaws and repurposed construction equipment because all of the available resources were being directed toward New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

Trees which fell on houses rested there for months, even in areas not generally considered part of the "disaster area." Today, most of that damage has been repaired, and the millions of trees felled by Katrina have been harvested in a tidy little windfall for the logging industry. You can still see the scars, trees not felled but left leaning and trunks snapped off forty feet up, all along every road. But the most enduring legacy is a certain bitterness that it took so long for help to arrive.

This is a link to the transcript of this talk which was delivered on April 8, 2006. A link to download the talk is also provided at the beginning of the transcript. I still haven't listened to the talk yet, but I think it would be considerably more interesting than reading only the transcript. :P

US population nears 300 million
I didn't know the US was now the third-most populous country in the world. It's also interesting that it's the only major country that seems to be bucking the trend of declining birth rates, even if a large proportion of that is through immigration...

Birds of Prey: The Feathered Killing Machines
When I was young (and before I grew up), I dreamed of owning falcons and raising them, and delighting in seeing them swoop across the sky. While I don't really feel that way any more, it's still an interesting subject for me, and that's why I liked reading this article. It also offers advice on how to raise your birds of prey.

I got my laptop repaired for free on Tuesday after waiting for about an hour. It needed a new motherboard, so all my files are still here. ^_^;; I should make a backup soon, though. Maybe when I have a little more time.

On the way home after buying some computer and audio cables, I stopped by the side gate to my condominium complex to see whether the cats were there. For those of you who haven't heard this before, there are three stray cats that live outside my condominium and they are absolutely adorable. :) Two of them are black, and one has a white patch of fur on its underside while another has a clipped ear, while the other non-black cat is a black and white one.

Anyway, the cat with the white patch decided that it liked my bare foot and nuzzled it with its nose. That was ticklish, to say the least, but more was to come.

I squatted on my legs to stroke the cat, and it attacked my side with its nose! ^^;; That was really too much for me to contain and I started laughing and backed away from the cat a little so I wouldn't hurt it. I don't know what it thought of the whole experience, though. Perhaps it was thinking "I will never understand these humans..." :P

Later that night, I went with my sister and cousin for an ice-cream treat at Haagen-Dazs in Holland Village (which is open until 12 am, not 10:30 or 11 pm like I thought) because my cousin was leaving on Wednesday afternoon, but we drove there and back and so I didn't see the cats. It was a very delicious treat though, as I had a Black Forest-themed ice-cream consisting of one scoop of brandied chocolate and another of chocolate together with some cherries, two chocolate sticks and lots of whipped cream. :)

When I came home today, all three cats were there again. The friendly one nuzzled my leg and rubbed itself over my boots while purring, and the other black cat decided it wanted to sharpen its claws on my boot. o_O Fortunately I was able to persuade it not to, and then I bent down again to stroke the cats. I guess I should have seen what was coming. :P

The friendly one attacked me with its nose again in my side. This time though, it aimed at the...softer part of my side. ^^;;; I really couldn't resist laughing and I nearly picked up the cat to cuddle it in my arms and stroke it endlessly. I didn't though, because it was already dark, being after 8 pm, and I was hungry.

I came home tired and somewhat worn out from a very long day, but lightened by the experience of being tickled by a very friendly black cat and by some other things that happened, although this entry isn't really the place to talk about them. :P

DIY Cat Feeder and Water Dispenser

It's awesome! :) Just because you can feed your cats via the Internet. :D

I don't have any cats right now, but this is definitely an idea I'd consider if I was going on vacation.

I'd want to make sure it worked first, though, and that the cats wouldn't topple it over. It would be a big problem if I came back home to a messy kitchen full of cat food and cats lying all over. :P

(Click here to post your own answers for this meme.)

I miss somebody right now. I don't watch much TV these days.  (Only the news) I own lots of books.  (Mostly fiction)
I wear glasses or contact lenses. I love to play video games. × I've tried marijuana.
× I've watched porn movies. × I have been the psycho-ex in a past relationship.  (I don't know how to answer this one...) I believe honesty is usually the best policy.
I curse sometimes. I have changed a lot mentally over the last year. × I carry my knife/razor everywhere with me.
it goes on... )

I feel very lucky today. That might be because I was allowed to leave 3 hours earlier than usual. It might also be because of some things that happened, which I won't really talk about here (but if you know me, you might be able to guess what they are). :P

I saw a link to an article, Push for simpler spelling persists while browsing Slashdot today. After reading the article, I believe that having such a system might, somehow, help more children, especially those who can't afford to read newspapers or books, learn how to spell English words. It would, however, make it even harder for American children to understand or be understood by others, particularly if they travel abroad. In my opinion, it is also a way for parents to avoid having to take the effort in correcting their children's spelling or going through English concepts such as prefixes and suffixes with them. I'm not going to touch on whether this represents a form of laziness that somehow seems to be reflective of American culture recently (for example, the increasing fast-food consumption or the declining state of American health)...

I'm not a linguist or someone who's especially interested in languages (consider, for example, the fact that I can only really speak, read and write English fluently, although I can speak and read Sinhala and I think I'm still proficient in Malay), but I never had a problem with learning how to spell simple words such as colour, or homonyms such as way and weigh even when I was young. I think that might be because I read a lot (newspapers, encyclopedias, books and novels/fiction) and because I attended a British international school for about 2 years.

Another reason is that my parents also made the effort to correct my spelling when I made mistakes, and they also taught me how to pronounce words and speak clearly. That advice may not always have fallen on receptive ears, and sometimes I resisted because it was more work to do all of that instead of speaking in a mumble, but I believe that it helped, especially when I compare myself (inevitably) to my peers and, in particular, the people I'm working with right now. I don't force others to improve, though I do suggest that they read an English newspaper (such as the Straits Times) if possible.
