Reflection on the state of society

A post in
sg_ljers offers some insights into part of what makes for a gracious society.
It wasn't very surprising, but nevertheless unexpected, to find out that Singapore scored on the low end as a whole. The authors of the article (referenced in the story) didn't really say why they thought we did so poorly, but in the comments to the post several themes have been raised:
- sense of competitiveness that everyone has (which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it shouldn't apply to all aspects of life)
- being scolded by those you're trying to help
- expecting that someone else will help the person
I suspect that the real reason is a combination of all of these factors and something else, but I don't know what it is.
