The dangers of being an evangelist

One of them is that you start taking it out of the (valid) context that it was originally designed for, such as raising awareness among people who may not know about a particular solution or its advantages over other solutions, and apply it to the choices that people make or to the things that they say.
I'm pretty annoyed with myself for the fact that I just (nearly) did that, and even though I apologized to the person concerned, that is something that can hurt a relationship for a long time; because people don't like being preached to and may hold it against you.
(In the interests of full disclosure, I was - and probably still am - a Microsoft student evangelist at my university.)
