Crazy torrent speeds
Dec. 2nd, 2004 11:44 amRight now I'm downloading the newly-released Stolen Lupin movie at 176 kb/s (via BT), with an upload of 0 kb/s... And there are people seeding this torrent who have more than 1 MB/s uplink.
Somehow, I can't help but feel that such experiences reinforce the perception that there are a lot of (ungrateful) leechers. After all, if people are uploading at that speed (and are willing to let the torrent run nearly-indefinitely), why should a single person try to contribute their meager 4 kb/s upload to the swarm?
On smaller torrents though, this problem usually doesn't arise, either because there is only 1 seed or because there is no extremely-fast seed.
I believe that ISPs' practice of capping the upload speed of connections while not capping the download speed will ultimately hurt not just BT (and other forms of P2P), but many of the other useful uses of the Internet, such as podcasting, online games (both single-player and multi-player). The worst part is that they promise an unmetered connection...
