New desktop~

I went with [livejournal.com profile] itsacz to Best Buy and after a few minutes which seemed more like hours I walked out with a new HP Pavilion 1730n system that is pretty decent (2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Vista Home Premium with a Windows Anytime Upgrade CD etc.), although it's no gaming machine. :P

After that, I dropped the boxes off at home and went with him for dinner at a Mexican restaurant he'd been to for lunch. It was great. ^_^

And now I'm typing this on my new desktop (albeit in a slightly awkward position). ^^;;;

/me demands you put cat wallpaper on desktop

[identity profile] nyankoframe.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Once I find one, that is. :P

Install vista ultimate on it!!! :p

[identity profile] nyankoframe.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe in the future, once I've decided what to do with it. ^^;;

I don't know why I forgot to mention that.. It's an Athlon 64 X2 4600+ dual core CPU (2.4 GHz) with onboard Nvidia GF6150LE graphics. Not spectacular, but it'll do.

Glad you liked Mexican food. :p My brother Andy already despises it because all the restaurants close to his house are Mexican. My sis-in-law keeps crossing to Mexico to buy things... Hehe!

What awkward position? o.o

[identity profile] nyankoframe.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I think if the only restaurants around were Mexican then I might get a bit weary of eating it too. ^^;;

And your sis-in-law is pretty interesting. ^^;;; *wonders if she's buying luggage there*

[identity profile] nakaemi.livejournal.com 2007-04-04 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, so far I think she has only bought books for Emi... ^^;;

[identity profile] nyankoframe.livejournal.com 2007-04-04 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ah ^^;;;; Does she buy Spanish children's books or something?

[identity profile] nyankoframe.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The awkward position is that my monitor, mouse and keyboard are on my dining table and the CPU is on the floor, and I have to be very careful when walking otherwise I'll trip over either the CPU or the monitor power cable. ^^;;;

If all the restaurants close to my house were Mexican food, especially if I lived that close to the border, I would just get fat because I never get tired of Mexican food. >_> Especially not REAL Mexican food.

[identity profile] nyankoframe.livejournal.com 2007-04-03 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm... I can't really say I've tried real Mexican food, so... ^^;;; Is it very different from Mexican food in the US?

[identity profile] nakaemi.livejournal.com 2007-04-04 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
LOL Then we should be glad that you don't live too close to the border, ne? We wouldn't want the cute llama to get fat! No way! Although I would love you anyway. :p

Have fun with your new desktop and make sure you do regular backups =p

Although that's going to be one more item to move come Saturday ^^;;;

[identity profile] giapet.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded on the backups. And be EXTRA paranoid about viruses, spyware, adware, etc-- HPs tend to be pretty touchy.

[identity profile] nyankoframe.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually do have some backups left over from last time (about 2/3rds of it, at least) on my external drive, but a lot of things are still on my laptop...

I'm not yet sure exactly what I'm going to do with this PC, but I definitely will take backups into consideration.

I didn't know HPs were touchy. o.o

[identity profile] giapet.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Of all the mainstream computer makers, I'd say that HP machines have the second-worst reputation (emachines being worse) in terms of reliability. I have a few of friends who owned HPs that fried or died for no discernible reason. ^^

...Of course, people say similar things about Dell computers, and my Dell laptop is still running great. And Alienware machines are supposed to be excellent, but mine keeps having little difficulties and requires extra-special care, especially in terms of dusting.

So generally, although I wouldn't recommend buying an HP, you'll probably be okay with it as long as you take good care of it-- clean it regularly, both in terms of hardware and software.

[identity profile] nyankoframe.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting... I'm glad I didn't buy emachines then. :P

I suppose a lot of people tend to extrapolate from one data point (it happened to them) to say that all _____ computers are good/not good...

Thanks for the advice! ^_^

[identity profile] giapet.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
There is virtually NO computer builder in existence that *no one* has complaints about =P But some definitely have better general reputations than others.

The good-reputation companies tend to be more expensive though, like Sony Vaios.

Actually, it's more like 3 additional boxes. ^^;;; The package came with a printer too, although I haven't opened that box. :P

If you say so... Though to me, dates usually mean romantic ones, or things like taking someone you're interested in out for dinner ^^;;;;;
