The wisdom of seventh graders: Designing an elective course

The entire article is quite funny in some cases, but it also gives you a view of what seventh graders (at least in WA) really have on their minds:

Examples )

Some sentences taken completely out of context:

*"In this class, students will learn how to vacation."

I want to sign up for this elective

*"Art is hard and easy but not both."

[livejournal.com profile] wao, any comments? :P

*"It would most likely shock the students that when you have a job you have to do just about everything by yourself."

Including waking up on time...

But the one that really cracks me up is this:

"Information. A combination of writing and public speaking. The student's recommendations for presentations? The second slide should contain ten bullet points. The third slide would be a five paragraph essay about the topic."

I'm sorry, I just can't stop laughing... ^^;;;; I've also seen a lot of ineffective presentations

I don't know who sang this or who played the piano accompaniment, but she has a very powerful voice and they can play the piano very well. :)

Also, the lyrics are in French, so I don't really understand any of it, except the title: "The Umbrella of Cherbourg". I could be wrong though. ^_^;;;

If anyone knows more about this song, feel free to comment. :P

I got my laptop repaired for free on Tuesday after waiting for about an hour. It needed a new motherboard, so all my files are still here. ^_^;; I should make a backup soon, though. Maybe when I have a little more time.

On the way home after buying some computer and audio cables, I stopped by the side gate to my condominium complex to see whether the cats were there. For those of you who haven't heard this before, there are three stray cats that live outside my condominium and they are absolutely adorable. :) Two of them are black, and one has a white patch of fur on its underside while another has a clipped ear, while the other non-black cat is a black and white one.

Anyway, the cat with the white patch decided that it liked my bare foot and nuzzled it with its nose. That was ticklish, to say the least, but more was to come.

I squatted on my legs to stroke the cat, and it attacked my side with its nose! ^^;; That was really too much for me to contain and I started laughing and backed away from the cat a little so I wouldn't hurt it. I don't know what it thought of the whole experience, though. Perhaps it was thinking "I will never understand these humans..." :P

Later that night, I went with my sister and cousin for an ice-cream treat at Haagen-Dazs in Holland Village (which is open until 12 am, not 10:30 or 11 pm like I thought) because my cousin was leaving on Wednesday afternoon, but we drove there and back and so I didn't see the cats. It was a very delicious treat though, as I had a Black Forest-themed ice-cream consisting of one scoop of brandied chocolate and another of chocolate together with some cherries, two chocolate sticks and lots of whipped cream. :)

When I came home today, all three cats were there again. The friendly one nuzzled my leg and rubbed itself over my boots while purring, and the other black cat decided it wanted to sharpen its claws on my boot. o_O Fortunately I was able to persuade it not to, and then I bent down again to stroke the cats. I guess I should have seen what was coming. :P

The friendly one attacked me with its nose again in my side. This time though, it aimed at the...softer part of my side. ^^;;; I really couldn't resist laughing and I nearly picked up the cat to cuddle it in my arms and stroke it endlessly. I didn't though, because it was already dark, being after 8 pm, and I was hungry.

I came home tired and somewhat worn out from a very long day, but lightened by the experience of being tickled by a very friendly black cat and by some other things that happened, although this entry isn't really the place to talk about them. :P

I feel very lucky today. That might be because I was allowed to leave 3 hours earlier than usual. It might also be because of some things that happened, which I won't really talk about here (but if you know me, you might be able to guess what they are). :P

I saw a link to an article, Push for simpler spelling persists while browsing Slashdot today. After reading the article, I believe that having such a system might, somehow, help more children, especially those who can't afford to read newspapers or books, learn how to spell English words. It would, however, make it even harder for American children to understand or be understood by others, particularly if they travel abroad. In my opinion, it is also a way for parents to avoid having to take the effort in correcting their children's spelling or going through English concepts such as prefixes and suffixes with them. I'm not going to touch on whether this represents a form of laziness that somehow seems to be reflective of American culture recently (for example, the increasing fast-food consumption or the declining state of American health)...

I'm not a linguist or someone who's especially interested in languages (consider, for example, the fact that I can only really speak, read and write English fluently, although I can speak and read Sinhala and I think I'm still proficient in Malay), but I never had a problem with learning how to spell simple words such as colour, or homonyms such as way and weigh even when I was young. I think that might be because I read a lot (newspapers, encyclopedias, books and novels/fiction) and because I attended a British international school for about 2 years.

Another reason is that my parents also made the effort to correct my spelling when I made mistakes, and they also taught me how to pronounce words and speak clearly. That advice may not always have fallen on receptive ears, and sometimes I resisted because it was more work to do all of that instead of speaking in a mumble, but I believe that it helped, especially when I compare myself (inevitably) to my peers and, in particular, the people I'm working with right now. I don't force others to improve, though I do suggest that they read an English newspaper (such as the Straits Times) if possible.

*hides* I really hope there isn't a beautiful llama hiding near my piano!

And why do I have to die after running into a wonderful fox? *frowns*

Ladies and Gentlemen -- we can achieve world peace with this image

To quote:

Let's show this image to all World Leaders (Perhaps carried on a silver tray by UN Ambassadress Angelina Jolie?). Without a doubt, the ooh's and aah's (in their respective native languages) should lead to world peace instantly. The image may also cure cancer if used properly. Please be aware that two Cuteologists lost their lives bringing you this photo, due to head explosion.

I think noself would be particularly interested in this one. :P

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

Last Saturday I helped [livejournal.com profile] flamedrop hide a body (-173 points). In July I caught a purse-snatcher who stole [livejournal.com profile] karmaforone's purse (30 points). Last Thursday I gave change to a homeless guy (19 points). Last Monday I ruled Duluth, Minnesota as a cruel and heartless dictator (-700 points). In April I bought porn for [livejournal.com profile] sotongxiaohei (10 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-814 points). For Christmas I deserve a lump of coal!

Sincerely,
nyankoframe

From llama:

It's all about class, my dear.
Aristocat! You're a sophisticated cat, proud to
hold your head up high even when somebody ruins
your day. You do have your bad hairball days,
but instead of freaking out over something,
you'd much rather take it in stride and move
on.

You are a Duck
You are on your way to becoming a llama. But for
now you are a duck. Keep trying though, and
one day, you will be worthy of llamaness.

The photo of the llama dressed up as Santa Claus is hilarious. :D As is the one of a llama watching TV.

"And William Hill also offers 100-1 that Rolf Harris, Barry Humphries, Lleyton Hewitt, Evonne Goolagong or Dennis Lillee are called up to Australia's Test squad."

I mean, really... *dies laughing*

Fred!
You are most like one of the emus! You're very
active and silly. You're perhapes not the
brightest of the bunch, but everyone enjoys
being around you. You're very curious and
sometimes that gets you into trouble. Also, be
careful what you eat, because not everything is
food! o_O
